Finally, spring is just around the corner! And while it’s easy to dream about longer, lighter days, just-bloomed daffodils and warm sunshine, of course the great British springtime will have its fair share of showers too. The ultimate period for transitional style, spring is the in-between season – so prepare to dress for any possible outcome. The key to spring dressing is versatility and layering – and securing a trusty collection of coats and jackets is an easy way to cover up and still look stylish.

There was plenty of coat inspiration on the Spring/Summer 2018 runways

Add long-line trench coats, cool, colourful biker jackets and practical rain-proof macs to your wardrobe to prepare for every climate – luckily, there was plenty of inspiration on the Spring/Summer 2018 catwalks to ensure outerwear has never been more on-trend. After all, a coat is the final piece of any outfit, and the first thing anyone sees. That’s the ideal excuse to make a statement, right?

Zip Detail Trench Coat, Whistles, £179

A trench coat is the ideal outerwear option for spring, particularly in this light cotton material which will layer easily over tee shirts and fine knitwear without looking bulky – but will also keep you warm when there’s still a little chill lingering in the air. Wear it belted-up with a chunky scarf for colder days, and leave open and loose during those treasured moments of sunshine.

Belted army jacket, And Other Stories, £89

A khaki army jacket is a great staple to have in any wardrobe, simply because it can be thrown on over most outfits and look stylish. Wear over a floaty floral dress and sandals to toughen up a look, or team with a t-shirt and jeans to add structure and colour – the options are endless. This And Other Stories option is thick enough to give a structured feel, with a tie-around belt for added shape.

Checked Car Coat, River Island, £85

Checked coats were a huge trend for Autumn/Winter 2017, so we love this new season take from River Island, which gives the look a candy pink update. Like the model, team with a cool slogan tee shirt and wide leg jeans to inject some fun into a casual look. The straight silhouette looks effortless left undone.

Long Blazer, Zara £49.99

Everyone should have a longline, slouchy blazer in their wardrobe – perfect for day to night dressing, it can be slung over every day outfits as well as evening dresses with ease. This dusky pink number offers quality and colour for a spring twist, but is also available in black as more of a staple buy.

Suede Biker Jacket, ASOS, £90

Most spring biker jackets come in the obligatory pastel shades, but this new ASOS number is rich in raspberry jewel-like tones – a big trend for Spring/Summer. Keep it cool with black skinny jeans and a vest, or layer over a girly midi dress to toughen up the look instantly. The beautiful smooth suede and luxe design details make this biker worth every penny.

Striped cut-off raincoat, Miss Selfridge, £39

We love this cute mint green mac for weekend walks and sheltering from spring showers! The striped lining, on show on the folded cuffs, adds an extra detail – while the drawstring hood is ultra-practical for rainy days. The material is shower-proof, so should keep your dry during any downpours - plus that pretty pastel green would brighten any dull day.

Belted coat, ASOS, £80

A long coat is a super-flattering style that will add a fashion edge to every outfit – and easily adds interest to a simple top and jeans ensemble. There are loads of options to choose from on the market, in plenty of colours and prints, but this stone-coloured option will go with everything, and has an extra design detail in the tied cuffs.

Tweed Berwyn jacket, Anthropologie, £148

In a light tweed, this long above-knee jacket will keep you warm whilst still feeling loose and light. Plus, the multi-coloured threads give a nod to the continuing rainbow trend – if in a subtle way – and bring plenty of colour to otherwise neutral outfits.
