Meghan Markle recently put the stacking ring trend firmly back in the spotlight, after stepping out in an array of delicate jewellery styles for her many public appearances in 2018. The look, which combines a variety of bands and styles to create a ‘stacked’ effect, is the star-approved way to wear rings – with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Jennifer Garner also fans of the interchangeable accessories. While the trend arguably originated with coveted British jewellery brand Monica Vinader, which has been selling its colourful and collectable rings for a decade, the look has certainly seen a resurgence in recent years, with fine, intricate bands taking the place of more statement pieces.

Prince Harry’s wife-to-be is certainly a fan of the look. For her official visit to Scotland, Meghan chose another cult British designer, Missoma, to adorn her fingers – opting for a variety of fine gold bands, including the brand’s £45 Interstellar Ring. Get the look by wearing fine pieces across your three middle fingers like the royal-to-be, layering two on the middle finger for that sought-after stacked look.

This colourful collection, from US-based independent brand My Story, showcases this season’s rainbow trend in the most precious way – mimic the look by teaming colourful stones with subtler gold bands to break up the colour.

Chain rings are another popular way to wear the more delicate look as favoured by Ms Markle – these beautiful sapphire rings need only another fine gold band to add a little extra detail. London-based designer Irena Chmura does this best, offering a selection of subtle pieces that still manage to make a statement.

Alexis Russell is a US-based designer specialising in handcrafted pieces using unique natural diamonds. Her most popular pieces, which have gained her a hefty following over on Instagram, feature gemstones in oval, triangular and teardrop shapes – complete with stacking bands to fit snugly around the design. A unique idea for an engagement ring, too!
Let’s be open
Open rings don’t complete a full circle like traditional bands, leaving a space of skin in between. Besides being practical – they are much more forgiving in terms of size – they are easier to stack, too, and will fit easily around rings with slightly bigger stones.
