The most exclusive workouts to try this year

Updated: October 3, 2024

When it comes to committing to an exercise regime, it helps if we actually enjoy our surroundings.

From state of the art classes, to the most luxurious changing rooms these are the London-based gyms that are the crème de la crème for working out in style. Best of all? We tried and tested the finest classes from each one.

So want to know what exclusive gyms are the go-to for London's glitterati? Here’s our round up of the very best luxury gyms and fitness classes.

MAD Lagree Fitness, Mayfair

MAD Lagree Fitness opened a new space in Mayfair

September 2024 saw MAD Lagree open their second site, opting for London's Mayfair for their new, ultra-chic outpost. So much more than a workout studio, guests can immerse themselves in wellness with an infrared sauna on site, as well as an offering of sports and Lymphatic massages, assisted stretching and tailored IV Drips - trust us, you'll need the relaxation after challenging yourself in one of their incredible classes.

Which class to try: We opted for the Lagree Starter class and the session was unlike anything we've tried before. The class is performed on a Megaformer machine (similar to a reformer Pilates bed), which uses slow, controlled movements with constant tension, promising increased strength, endurance and a sculpted physique.

The class was super challenging, but our instructor was supportive and unintimidating, talking the group of beginners through each pose, making sure everyone was comfortable. Throughout the 45-minute class, there were no breaks, meaning we worked up a serious burn, without getting sweaty - perfect if you want to do a class before work or on your lunch break.

Third Space, Clapham Junction

The reformer Pilates studio is bathed in light

Third Space has just opened a brand new Clapham outpost, and it might just be the most fabulous yet. Situated inside an iconic former department store a stone's throw from Clapham Junction, the three-floor wellness heaven boasts original beams and floor-to-ceiling arched windows, making it the most stylish workout space we've visited in the capital.

The incredible space offers over 100 classes per week, including hot yoga, reformer Pilates and spin, plus there's a dedicated recovery zone with massage guns to ease sore muscles. The changing space has to be noted too, as it's more akin to a luxury spa than a gym changing room.

The changing rooms are spacious and luxe

Stone and ceramic mingle together to create a relaxing space complete with magnifying mirrors, plenty of hair tools and all your bodycare needs. It's a world away from the hectic changing rooms you often find in exercise studios, adding to the high end feel of Third Space.

Which class to try: We booked into Third Space's reformer Pilates class, held in a light-bathed studio with the natural glow of the sun creating an open, welcoming vibe, even for total newbies. The class was challenging, but everyone was encouraged to work at their own pace, with the sparkling new equipment a joy to use. The instructor was supportive and motivating, making even the advanced moves accessible for newcomers - we can't wait to book in again!

Heartcore

Heartcore's studio is ultra-calming

Heartcore has several different outposts including St. John's Wood, Kensington and Notting Hill, but it was the Bayswater studio we visited. As soon as we stepped through the doors we felt cocooned in a sense of calm, with the space super-welcoming and relaxing.

The trainers are all warm and approachable, but we particularly fell in love with Tifuh, who was the most gorgeous, spirited bundle of energy who made you feel like you could do anything.

Which class to try: The studio has just introduced three Heartcore On The Mat Infrared Classes;  Strength, Cardio and Flow, all performed in a toasty, infrared heated studio which helps lubricate muscles, relieve pain and boost your mood - plus it felt extra cosy because it was tipping it down outside.

We booked in for Flow, which works on flexibility, body awareness, balance and core strength. It was certainly challenging, but Tifuh's incredible playlist soothed any weary muscles and empowered us to stick it out in the more challenging poses.

The class promises to release built-up tension and stress through breathing, leaving you feeling calm, open and restored - and I certainly left the class feeling so much lighter than I arrived.

Studio Fix

Studio Fix in High Street Kensington

High Street Kensington's newest fitness destination has to be seen to be believed. The three-floor spot is bright and airy, with brushed gold finishings giving the space a high-end feel - and the changing rooms are more akin to a luxury spa than a workout studio.

The gym has three studios with six different class concepts, and one of the stand-out features is that all classes are fully adaptable for wheelchair users.

Which class to try: We booked the Boxing class, which takes place in the downstairs studio, complete with floor-to-ceiling coloured lights which change in time with the pace of the class.

TrainerSimi White took our class and was the perfect combination motivating to push attendees, as well as kind and chatty, so we didn't feel pressured or intimidated. Simi made us want to work hard and do well, because she was putting her all into coaching.

The session switched between boxing on the water bags, with Simi teaching professional techniques, strength sections and a touch of cardio to keep things challenging. The music was incredible too, with a mixture of Britney, Rihanna and Raye soundtracking the class.

Dabbs Fitness

Dabbs Fitness is an intimate space

Dabbs Fitness' motto is 'training, not exercise' - and that's clear as soon as you walk through the entrance, tucked away in Mayfair. There's no shouting at you to do burpees or increase your reps - instead, you receive personalised coaching to help you get the best from your workout.

Dabbs Fitness offers intimate classes, with no more than eight people per session, meaning you get one-on-one input from the expert trainers. The class feels more like a personal training appointment than a group session, with guidance on every move to ensure you're nailing it - and constantly improving.

The space itself is fresh, with pristine equipment and minimalist decor - plus, they have Byredo hand care in the changing rooms, which gives the boutique space a tick in our book.

Dabbs Fitness offers small classes

Which class to try: The Dabbs Training Session focuses on strength training, with the gym's expert trainers helping you build muscle, improve posture and increase your overall strength. The class we tried included a variety of weighted moves including rows, squats and lunges, all mixed together so there's no chance to get bored. Each person chooses their own weight (as long as it challenges them), so there's no worry of getting left behind. You work at your own pace, and we guarantee you'll feel like you smashed your session by the end.

Remedi London

Remedi London combines aesthetics and workouts

Aesthetics meets wellness at Remedi London, Battersea's ultra-chic, uber-relaxing space, where you can indulge in everything from face and body treatments to blissful yoga sessions to hypnotherapy and reiki. The lobby is among the most zen places you'll ever set foot, with plush seating and soothing music - but their yoga workouts are still seriously challenging.

Which class to try: Remedi's Kundalini yoga session has to be experienced to be understood. From breathing techniques to leg raises to making noises (yes, really) it's unlike anything we've tried before and left us with a sense of calm we've never felt post-yoga. While the session was relaxing, it was a challenge too, with repetitive movements making the session feel like a workout as well as a soothing hour.

East of Eden is the perfect spot for yoga and Reformer Pilates

If you're looking for a secluded bolthole to practice yoga and reformer Pilates in, East of Eden needs to be on your 'to-visit' list. Huddled away in a mews street in Walthamstow, the studio is charming and airy, with an abundance of plants making the space feel zen - plus there's a great cafe/shop on the ground floor selling local goodies for a post-class treat.

Which class to try: We booked into Vinyasa Yoga and loved our teacher's laid-back teaching style. We visited in the midst of a heatwave (a distant memory now!) and she made sure to tailor the class to the absurd temperature, encouraging us to take it easy rather than go too hard in the hot weather. The pace was perfect and non-intimidating and we left in a relaxed haze of happiness.
